Township Responsibilities & Services


Township Roads : The maintenance and repair of township roads is the largest function of most of Ohio's townships today and includes such activities as snow removal and weed control. Jefferson Township maintains 45 square miles of roadway. Townships receive part of the state's motor vehicle license fees and gasoline tax, as well as generating additional revenues through local taxation to fund road maintenance.


Police Protection : The Board of Jefferson Township Trustees has a current contract with the Montgomery County Sheriff's office to protect its residents.


Fire Protection/EMS : The Jefferson Township Fire Department is staffed with full-time and part-time staff members. The Jefferson Township Fire Department operates out of 2 fire stations and provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) medical service to its residents.


Cemeteries : The township manages several township cemeteries. The Township Trustees have the authority to sell plots, set fees for services, maintain the cemetery, and provide for expansion. The cemeteries are operated by revenue from burials and donations.


Parks and Recreation : Jefferson Township operates two parks on their own. These two parks are Richardson & Blairwood Parks and are funded by general fund money.


Zoning : Jefferson Township regulates the use of land and buildings and control the development of their own territory . Ohio law provides for the submission of a zoning plan to the electors of the township and contains provisions for the adoption, administration, enforcement, and amendment of the zoning plan. The Jefferson Township Code & Comprehensive Land Use Plan was updated in 2015.


Code Enforcement: The Code Enforcement Office under the Direction of Code enforcement Officer is responsible for addressing a residents’ concern about items like Blighted Properties, High Grass, Junk Vehicles and Debris, and Nuisance Code Violations.

The Code Enforcement Office is responsible for Enforcement of The Property Maintenance Code, as well as compliance with the Zoning Code, like Outdoor Storage complaints.

The Code Enforcement Officer works with the Administrator, Zoning Administrator and The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office on special projects.


Waste Disposal : Townships are authorized to provide waste disposal services to their residents. The Jefferson Township trustees have established a trash district to collect and dispose of garbage and refuse by a written contract with The City of Dayton. The cost of refuse collection and waste disposal is funded solely by the revenue from fees billed to every residential property owner.
