Jefferson Township Awarded $75,000 Ohio EPA H2Ohio Grant for Salt Storage Facility

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Jefferson Township has been awarded a $75,000 H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to improve the Road Department’s salt storage facility.

The Township will use the grant funding to replace its aging salt shed with a modern, covered storage facility designed to better protect road salt from rain, snow, moisture, and condensation. The existing structure has reached the end of its useful life and no longer provides the level of protection needed for the Township’s road salt and deicing materials.

“This grant gives Jefferson Township an opportunity to make an important investment in our infrastructure while also protecting the environment,” said Dr. Chrisondra Goodwine, Jefferson Township Administrator. “Properly storing road salt will help reduce waste, protect taxpayer resources, improve our winter road maintenance operations, and decrease the potential for chloride runoff into nearby waterways.”

The planned improvements are expected to:

• Protect road salt from rain, snow, and moisture

• Reduce salt loss and material waste

• Lower the potential for chloride runoff into streams, wells, and groundwater

• Improve the efficiency of winter road maintenance operations

• Provide a safer and more effective workspace for Road Department employees

• Support long-term savings through improved material management

The estimated project cost is $86,199. The Ohio EPA grant will provide $75,000 toward the facility improvements. Jefferson Township has committed to providing the remaining project funding, covering demolition costs associated with the existing structure, and including future operation and maintenance expenses in the Township’s annual budget.

The project is located within the Opossum Creek–Great Miami River watershed. By preventing rain and snow from contacting stored salt, the new facility will help reduce the possibility of salt leaching from storage piles and entering surrounding streams, wells, and groundwater.

Jefferson Township will measure the project’s effectiveness by tracking the amount of salt stored and applied, monitoring salt loss, inspecting the facility, and reviewing its impact through the Township’s annual environmental compliance process. Road Department employees will also receive training on the proper use and maintenance of the facility and responsible management of salt and other deicing materials.

“This project demonstrates how partnerships between state and local government can strengthen public infrastructure while supporting environmental stewardship,” Dr. Goodwine said. “We appreciate the Ohio EPA’s investment in Jefferson Township and our community.”

The project is supported through the Ohio EPA H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant Program under Project Number CCH2OSALT-243.
