Jefferson Township Completes New Salt Storage Facility with Support from Ohio EPA H2Ohio Grant

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Jefferson Township has completed a new covered salt storage facility for its Road Department with support from a $75,000 Ohio EPA H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant.



The project replaced an aging salt shed that had reached the end of its useful life. The new facility provides a secure, covered area designed to protect the Township’s road salt from rain, snow, moisture, and other weather conditions.

“Completion of this facility is an important investment in our roads, our environment, and our responsibility to taxpayers,” said Dr. Chrisondra Goodwine, Jefferson Township Administrator. “The new structure will help us protect valuable road salt, reduce waste, improve our winter maintenance operations, and decrease the risk of chloride runoff reaching nearby waterways.”

The new salt storage facility will provide several long-term benefits to Jefferson Township, including:

• Better protection of taxpayer-funded road salt

• Reduced material loss and waste

• Reduced potential for chloride runoff into streams and groundwater

• Improved winter road maintenance operations

• A safer and more efficient workspace for Road Department employees

• Long-term savings through improved material management

The project supports the goals of the H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant Program by improving the storage and management of road salt and other deicing materials. Properly covered salt storage helps prevent precipitation from contacting salt piles and carrying chlorides into nearby streams, wells, groundwater, and other natural resources.

The project is located within the Opossum Creek–Great Miami River watershed. Jefferson Township will monitor the long-term effectiveness of the facility by tracking salt storage and application, reviewing material loss, maintaining the facility, and including it in the Township’s annual environmental compliance inspections.

Jefferson Township received $75,000 through the Ohio EPA H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant Program for the facility improvements. The Township also committed local resources toward the project and will include ongoing operation and maintenance expenses in its annual budget.

“This project demonstrates how state and local partnerships can strengthen public infrastructure while supporting responsible environmental practices,” Dr. Goodwine said. “We appreciate the support of the Ohio EPA, our Road Department employees, project partners, and everyone who helped bring this project to completion.”
